“If you let yourself be absorbed completely, if you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly those moments.”– Anne Morrow Lindbergh
It has been said that the quality of our moments produces the quality of our life. Every year before the new year I spend some quality time meditating about my life and how I can make it better. Each year my kids and I come up with a family motto. We put this motto on the wall and do our best to live it. This year my brother Austin has inspired me to follow the motto Carpe Punctum. Carpe Punctum means Seize THIS Moment.
I have developed a passion for seeing the sun rise and sun set. I love driving to places I have never been before to see the sun come up and the sun go down. One thing I have learned is there is that one moment in time which the sun completely hides itself. If you look away you will miss the beauty. The moment is fleeting but the memory will last forever. I have come to realize that is what life is all about. Life is about building memories and living in the moment. When I am with my kids I need to be WITH my kids! When I am on a date with a beautiful girl I need to be PRESENT giving her all of my attention! There are too many moments that pass us by if we are not really there for that moment. I have been outside thousands of times when the sun came up and went down, but until I started paying attention to all its beauty I didn’t appreciate the gift.
Life is a gift. We can squander it or we can live it. We can try to escape it or we can hold on and enjoy it. We can create moments to seize, or we can sit on our couch and watch one more re-run of that show we have seen a thousand times. As I was the only dude ice skating by myself on New Year’s Eve I realized it didn’t matter that everyone probably thought I was a loser, or that I really sucked at ice skating. The important thing was living in a moment in time and building a memory that would last a life time. I know I wouldn’t have remembered sitting on the couch watching a re-run of Seinfeld. The only way we can seize the moments in life is to be happy with who we are. We have to love ourselves. How many people do not like the way they look, or the way they feel?
As we go into the new year if there is something keeping you from seizing the moments, CHANGE! Stop complaining about the things you are unwilling to change! If you want to look and feel better commit to an exercise and diet plan. If you want to be more motivated, read a motivational book. If you want to travel, stop eating out so much and save some money. A new year isn’t about writing a bunch of crap down that you have no intention of doing. A new beginning is about soul searching and finding out what will make you happy and what your true desires and passions are.
As for me this year I WILL Seize THIS Moment!! I will not let a few bumps in the road slow me down. If I let one moment pass me by I will recommit to seize the next. If one moment sucks I will discard it and move on to the next moment. I say bring on the new year, and bring on many great moments. I’m ready to SEIZE!!
